Hi Zak,

You can filter for other countries on Alibaba, it is not just for China suppliers.

Hi Julie,

There are many other countries you can source products from. You can search for manufacturers in the US as well. Even when using Alibaba, you can filter by a specific country, including the US.

I’d love to step into this world but don’t want to source products from a sweat shop in China or anywhere for that matter, I thought this might be mentioned as a disadvantage to sourcing from coutries in Asia? Would love to know more about sourcing ethically.
Many thanks

Hi Mona,

Thanks for your comments and feedback!

If you check out the methodology of the report, it explains that an import is not a universal standard. Some imports are containers, other packages, and pieces, and so on. (These three import unit types do make up more than 90% of imports.)
Second, you’re correct that this graph leaves out some of the top countries. If you look at the table on the previous page (p. 21 — U.S. Imports by Country | 2020), 21 countries with more than 1% share of U.S. imports are listed there, and “all others” make up the remaining 15.3%.

Read thru your Global import report. You guys have put lot of efforts in producing the report. Appreciate the hard work. However I would like to mention following as a way to make it better.
1. Chapter one talks about number of imports, however it does not mention unit of import. for example ” Total imports for the U.S. rose 13.2% between 2015 and 2019. And overall imports for the U.S. have averaged nearly 12 million per year since 2015″. Here it is not mentioned if 12 Million of what!! Is it 12 Million USD? Is it 12 Million Containers? Is it 12 Million Container ships?
2. Chapter three page 22 Chart on Share of Us import by country. The total of all countries comes to 87.6 % and not 100%
3. Charts “Share of us imports by top countries”. They are beautiful colorful charts. However, legends color markings are a thin line. Instead if it was a big square it would be easier to read it back. Also, there are multiple shades of red and orange.
Thanks,

New to this world, I’m keen to source products that are ethically made. Do you have any tips on how to look out for more ethical suppliers?

Thanks
